In Ontario, there are a total of eight different native turtle species – and each has become a species at risk. Seven of those eight species live in The Land Between, which contains more than one third of all of Ontario’s turtles.
Turtles call lakes and wetlands home! We refer to turtles as eco-heroes because they are keystone species, vital to clean water, nutrient transfer, seed dispersal, and the lives of 70% of fish and wildlife in our landscape. Of course, we humans also rely on these ecosystems, as well as the turtles which maintain the environments that keep us healthy and happy.
Have I told you about Turtle Guardians?
Because we’ve already lost an estimated 60% of turtles in the southern half of the province, and for those you may encounter on roadways it takes an average of 60 years to replace each turtle only once, we must work strategically.
We focus heavily on education, reaching 1500 children a year through our camps and school programs. Due to the success of our children’s programming, we now also offer an adult turtle camp and we are looking into opening a kids Nature Centre; a safe environment where kids can interact with nature, learn skills, and also hang out with our teaching turtles in care.
Donor contributions like yours directly support our incubation program! We have become one of the largest incubators in Ontario, increasing the chances of hatchling survival by 200% (from 1 in 1400 to 1 in 250). Incubation programs have reversed declines of Green Sea turtles and Spiny Softshell turtles too! Currently, it only costs us $5 to incubate and release a hatchling and we average approximately 9000 hatchlings each year.
Donations also assist us in testing affordable prototype ecopassages on county roads to combat turtle mortality and right now these cost us $30 per metre to implement.
Behind all these action efforts is a tremendous amount of research! Turtles may move slowly, but they move deliberately, and can be extremely difficult to study. The funds we raise are used to help us keep up to the challenge!
We have been discovering that the lack of calcium in our lakes is causing issues for turtles. Painted turtle hatchlings are being born with deformaties. We are studying this trend to find ways to help!
In addition to pioneering road ecopassage designs, we are experimenting with nesting mounds, to keep turtles away from road shoulders where possible!
We are researching overwitnering sites to see if turtles can adapt to drought conditions and wetland loss.
Thank you your time! You are a valuable part of our community, and your feedback will help us continue meaningful work.
