The Self-image

Our self-image can be compared to a jigsaw puzzle, with each piece contributing to a coherent whole. Just as a jigsaw puzzle is made up of different types of pieces, differentiated by their colors and shapes, our perception of ourselves is built up from multiple interlocking elements.

Qu’est-ce que l’Image de Soi ?

Whether we're aware of it or not, we carry within us a mental image of what we believe ourselves to be. As you can see, the key word in the sentence you've just read is the verb “to believe”.

These elements can be grouped into three main categories:

Education

Interpersonal relations

Body image

It's the image reflected by our body that most influences our perception of ourselves, since it's the only tangible, visible element by which we can be judged.

Education shapes us: a child who is belittled will tend to underestimate himself all his life, despite his successes.

To attract success and friendship, surround yourself with positive people. Be interesting to yourself before being interesting to others.

The Body Image

The evolution of Body Image

Body image is the mental representation we have of our body, the way we perceive it. It's closely linked to what the body inspires in us, including a sense of control and seduction.

Body image, like all feelings and perceptions, can evolve and differ profoundly from the way others see us.

It is also closely linked to self-esteem.

However, image can be severely shaken, and the person may feel that their body is suddenly foreign to them, or be destabilized because it no longer functions as it used to. Self-esteem can take a hit. Anxiety may prevent you from feeling good about yourself. You'll have to learn to live with these changes, and gradually build up a new body image. Taking the time to get used to this new image and reappropriate your body is a process that may take more or less time, depending on the individual.

Positive, it fosters self-confidence. Negative, it breeds self-doubt. It's not just an objective assessment, but also the way we treat ourselves in the face of life's hazards. Naturally, the brain focuses on problems in order to solve them, since danger often comes from what goes wrong. However, it's essential to focus on what's going well to comfort ourselves and generate positive emotions, so we can better face difficulties.

The Role of the Socio-Hairdresser in Self-Image Support

As a professional socio-coiffeur, you'll support your customer in his or her mental image.

A poor self-image has very specific causes that go back a long way. The image we have of ourselves rubs off on our behavior. If our image is that of an inferior person, others will treat you as an inferior being. Attitudes, emotions and gestures have become habitual and routine over time. To improve your self-image, you need to get rid of habits, simply by making conscious decisions.

Socio-hairdresser tools for support

Face-to-face customer care

Taking charge of your customer through group workshops.

It's by being face-to-face with you that he'll be able to share his attitudes, emotions and gestures.

It's through workshops that your customer can break hair habits, by putting into practice new approaches to hair.

The socio-coiffeur will spend a lot of time observing the client, trying to understand his or her relationship with self-image. You'll need to adapt certain behaviors to help the person accept their new image. Let her talk openly about what's bothering her, invite her to ask questions, and if you see that she's having trouble coping, inform those around her so that you can offer her professional help.

Importance of Appearance and Complementary Care

The more negative your self-image, the longer you'll need support. Taking care of our appearance gives us the opportunity to remain in an active role, and to do something for and by ourselves. Taking care of your looks is good for your morale, and gives you the energy you need to get through the ordeal by accepting the solutions proposed.

Cranial massage

A cranial massage can have a soothing effect on body and mind.
