A few important definitions to get you started: Immigration: the act of coming to live permanently in a new countryDiscrimination: the act of treating some people unfairly without reason Xenophobia: a fear or hatred of foreign people or things Empathy: Being able to share and understand another's feelings, situation, or attitudes. (Wordsmyth, 2024)

What is immigration, immigration discrimination and Xenophonia?

The video on the left illustrates what immigration is, why it's important and its relevance as a symbol of the United States.

Together, we read "The Last Stop on Market Street" by Matt De La Pena. In that story, CJ's grandmother teaches him how to appreciate the beauty of both the world around them and the cultural diversity within their community. Building empathy for others is one way to combat social issues, like Xenophobia and discrimination toward foreign people. Review the following project options to complete with a partner. Once you are finished, complete the assessment reflection that is on the assessment slide and turn your finished work into your teacher.

Xenophobia

Certain groups of people believe that immigrants or people who are considered "outsiders" threaten our country's foundational beliefs. Many of today's anti-immigration groups target migrants crossing the southern border (Yates et al., 2023).The result of these types of beliefs and stances is that it spreads negative stereotypes that dehumanize immigrants, communities of color or of a certain heritage (Yates et al., 2023). These types of beliefs fuel attacks from extremist groups, negatively impact the mental health of targeted groups, and undermine democracy (Yates et al., 2023).

Important reminders in combatting this issue:

  • We must reject Xenophobic ideas by standing up for people being discriminated against.
  • Participate in inclusive community activities and be part of activist groups against the issue.
  • Speak up! Write letters to representatives and speak to others about the issue using facts.
