New concept: Subject-Verb Agreement
Indefinite pronouns - Singular
anybody, anyone, anything each, either, everybody, everyone, everything, neither, either, nobody, no one, nothing, one, somebody, someone, something
Anything left in the gym goes in the lost and found box.
Somebody deflates all the volleyballs at the end of the season.
Indefinite pronouns - Plural
both, few, many, several
Many children celebrate Halloween this week.
Don't forget my "They/He" test! Ex: "They celebrate Halloween this week."
Tricky -- Some indefinite pronouns can be either singular or plural!
For these, look at the object of the preposition to determine the verb.
all, any, more, most, none, some
Some [of the eggs] was/were rotten, so I threw them away. eggs = plural (were)
More [of the carpet] is/are damaged in the bedroom than in the hallway. carpet = singular (is)
If you have two subjects - one singular, one plural...
Choose the verb based on the subject that is the closest in the sentence.

Ex: Either the bus or the cars [are] causing the traffic jam.
Ex: Neither strawberries nor milk [makes] him sick.

In Kentucky, apostrophes are taught in 2nd grade!
This skill is not considered progressive; in other words it should be mastered in 2nd grade. And yet...it's one of the most frequently missed skills on the ACT.

First, let's define a few words:
1. Singular 1 object or person 2. Plural 2 or more 3. Possessive 3 a word that indicates ownership
Rule 1: Use an apostrophe to indicate omitted letters when words are contracted.
Ex: They are not going to the game. They aren't going to the game. ARE + NOT = Aren't
Ex: We will probably ... We'll probably....have time to stop at the park. WE + WILL = We'll
Common contractions: I'm don't you're doesn't they're here's it's didn't you've isn't
Rule 2: Apostrophes are added to nouns to show possession
Singular noun ending in "s" - Add an apostrophe
Singular noun - Add an apostrophe and an "s"
Mr. Sears' truck is parked on Maple Street.
The baby's toy is lying on the sidewalk.
Rule 2: Apostrophes are added to nouns to show possession
Plural noun NOT ending in "s" - Add an apostrophe and an "s"
Plural noun ending in "s" - Add only an apostrophe
Our neighbors' trees were struck by lightning.
