How to create developmentally appropriate instruction
and consider students
How to Create:
- Creating developmentally appropriate instruction involves aligning teaching strategies, content, and assessments with the cognitive, emotional, and social needs of the students (Parrish, 2019).
- For the 4th-grade unit on rounding multi-digit whole numbers (4.NBT.A.3), I carefully considered the developmental stage of the students to ensure that the instruction was engaging, accessible, and supportive.
Including Consideration of Student Strengths, Interested and Needs:
- Instruction was aligned with the developmental characteristics of 4th graders. Ensuring that the content was accessible, engaging, and supportive of their cognitive, emotional, and social growth (Parrish, 2019).
Two examples
Strategy #2: Tiered assignments involve creating different levels of tasks based on students' readiness and ability (CITE). In this unit, I designed tiered rounding problems that varied in complexity for various students. For example, one tier involved rounding numbers to the nearest ten or hundred, while a more advanced tier required rounding numbers to the nearest thousand or ten thousand.
Strategy #1: Presenting content in various ways: visual, auditory, kinesthetic while also allowing students to express their understanding in different ways. For example, the concept of rounding was taught using a combination of visual aids like number lines and anchor charts.
Engaging: This approach was effective because it recognized that students learn in different ways and allowed them to engage with the material in the mode that best suited their learning style.
Engaging: Tiered assignments allowed students to work at their own pace and level of understanding, ensuring that all students were appropriately challenged without feeling overwhelmed.

Assessment
Data
- Using assessment data to differentiate instruction is crucial in creating an effective and responsive learning environment (Ciccarelli, 2024).
- Assessment data provides educators with information into students' strengths, weaknesses, learning preferences, and progress. This enables educaotrs to tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of their students.

Opportunities: Creating opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning in different ways is essential for accommodating diverse learning styles, abilities, and interests (Rasmussen, 2022).

- A student’s funds of knowledge, which include their personal, family, and community experiences as well as cultural norms, have a significant impact on their learning and the creation of a differentiated curriculum (Funds of Knowledge Toolkit, 2023).
- Examples: Relevance and engagement, building on existing knowledge, creating an inclusive learning environment

Technology allows for personalized learning experiences, real-time feedback, and flexible content delivery, making it easier for teachers to address individual student needs (Bankar, 2023). 1. Ready is an adaptive learning platform that provides individualized instruction. 2. YouTube can be use to differentiate instruction by providing access to a wide range of videos that cater to various learning styles, interests, and abilities.
