1. In all four films there is a gap between the real and the surreal. Alice finds herself in a world that defies logical norms. In Matrix she presents a reality that can be controlled by machines. In Joker she makes the protagonist live a reality distorted by his sick mind. In American Horror she has disturbing situations that make it difficult to distinguish reality. 2. Alienation is another major theme. Alice feels alienated in a world that doesn't follow the rules she knows. Matrix tries to figure out her true identity. Joker is an outcast from society and struggles with his identity. American Horror visits alienation from characters who are isolated from their peers.
