It can take any value, it is usually the variable that we can control.
It changes value as the independent variable changes. It is usually the variable that we can measure.
There are 3 types of variable control
Presence/absence

How does the phenomenon behave with the variable present? How does the phenomenon behave without the variable? Example: Do children swear when their parents are present?
How much does the independent variable influence the dependent variable? The number of swear words a child says when there are more adults present.
It is not the amount that matters, but rather the manner or means of controlling the independent variable. For example, when testing the preventive effect on a certain disease of a vaccine administered by two different routes: intramuscularly (injected) and orally (ingested), in that case it is the same amount of independent variable only presented in two different ways.
