Score Interpretation

- You are an artist -- have a "point of view!" - Interpretive elements:- Tempi - Phrasing - Dynamics - Articulation - Balances: colors/textures- Silence/rests - Solos

Rehearsal Planning

- Based on your understanding and knowledge of the score (from study and score reading). - Plan rehearsals from reading to performance. - Also plan individual/weekly rehearsals.

Score Reading

- SING or play through each part of the music. - Try to keep a steady beat. - Combine parts (use piano) to get an aural image of the score. - Hear the sounds in your mind. - Repeat throughout the score study process. - The stronger the aural image, the more compelling you can be!

Additional Considerations

- Use recordings as an additional reference, but not in lieu of score reading/study. - Colored pencils: RED, BLUE, GREEN - Memorization - Ask, "WHY?" and "What do the musicians need?" - Use storytelling to convey the narrative of the music. - Metronome use - Let gestures come from your aural image. Patterns are not the music!

Score Analysis

- Identify the FORM first! - Investigate the elements of music:- Themes/melody - Harmony - Rhythm - Orchestration/texture - Dynamics - Articulations - Text- Make multiple "passes" to focus your study.

Score Orientation

- Look at the cover and introductory pages. - Examine the first page of music. - Leaf-through the score - Create a context:- Who? - What? - When? - Where? - Why?
