About this speaking section

The examiner will give you a card with two related photos on it. You will be asked two questions.

1. Firstly you have to describe what you can see in the photos in relation to a topic.
2. The second question asks you to interpret some aspects of these photos or to express a personal reaction to them

Useful language

Making a choice

I would choose the first photo because... Based on what I can see...the first picture seems more convincing

Comparing the photos:

in the first/second photo... both photos seem to show... whereas in the first photo,..... in the second photo,...

• Speak generally about the photos and what they represent.
• Don't describe what you can see in the photos-- you should compare and speculate. At this level, the examiner doesn't want to know the color of the clothes the people are wearing or the weather. Use the topic to talk about a wider concept.
• It can help to talk about the topic in general not just your own experiences.

• Listen carefully to the examiner's instructions, and only ask for them to be repeated if you really didn't understand.
• Remember to compare the two photos in your answer. The questions give you the chance to speculate and show a range of language
