Introduction

The basics of Cortical. Visual Impairment (CVI)
Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is a visual impairment caused by issues in the brain's visual pathways or occipital lobes. It can be mild to severe, depending on the timing, location, and severity of the brain insult. CVI means the brain struggles to interpret visual input, but it doesn't reflect cognitive ability. CVI, Neurological Visual Impairment, and Cerebral Visual Impairment are often used interchangeably.
Cortical visual impairment vs. Blindness
+ info
CIV can co-exist with other disaiblities
Children with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) initially seem blind, but vision often improves, especially in the first two years. Recovery varies due to brain plasticity and neurological damage. CVI can coexist with ocular visual loss, requiring evaluation by both a neurologist and ophthalmologist. Diagnosis is challenging, involving poor visual response despite normal eye exams, and relies on MRI and visual function evaluation.

Phase 1 of CVI
Learning How to LooK
Visual Behaviors
- Latency for looking
- Color preference
- Can usually process no more than 1 color at a time
- Use a black background
- Highlight salient features of single objects with a flashlight
- Use a wait time of of 5-10 seconds for students to respond to visual stimuli
- Reduce complexity as much as possible
Evaluation - 4/4

Phase 2 of CVI

Learning How to Looke
Visual Behavior
- Objects may have 2-3 visual characteristics
- visual field preferences are decreasing
- May use right and left visual fields interchangeable
- Tolerance of vision with other types of sensory input increases
- Sprinkle the students routine with their preferred color, particularly in pictures.
- Continue to increase the multi sensory complexity while controlling the amount of extra stimuli that they are exposed to when using their vision
- Present visual stimuli in both the left and right fields
Evaluation - 4/4
Objectives and Navigation
Phase 3 of CVI
+ info
Learning How Look
Visual behaviors:
- Challenged to view objects at a distance beyond 10-15'
- Visual field differences
- Need for visual targets with high complexity to be paired with color or background light
- Highlight salient features of photos and environmental objects
- Gradually add background detail to 2D ojbects
- Use color, movement and light to hightlight detail
Evaluation - 4/4
Modules - Module 2
CVI Basics Course Summary
The Re-Cap
CVI isn't about the eyes. It's about the brain
Phase 1 CVI focuses on multi-sensory awareness
Phase 2 CVI is about use our senses together
Phase 3 CVI is about building sensory complexity
