COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES
By: Victor Vera G.
START
CoMPARATIVES
The comparative is used in English to compare differences between the two objects it modifies (larger, smaller, faster, higher). It is used in sentences where we compare two nouns.
NEXT
EXAMPLE:
Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).
SUPERLATIVES
The superlative is used to describe an object that is at the highest or lowest point of a quality (the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest). It is used in sentences where we compare a subject with a group of objects.
NEXT
EXAMPLE:
Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (object).
How do we form regular comparatives and superlatives?
The form will depend on the number of syllables in the adjective.
One syllable adjectives:
- Add -er for the comparative and -est for the superlative.
- If the adjective ends in a consonant + vowel + consonant, the last consonant must be repeated before adding the ending.

Two-syllable adjectives:
- They can be formed into a comparative by adding -er, or by placing 'more' before the adjective, like three-syllable adjectives.
- These adjectives can also be formed into a superlative by adding the ending -est , or by placing 'most' before the adjective.
- When a two-syllable adjective ends in 'y' , we must change it to 'i' before adding the ending.
