Asking effective questions: some tips!

Click on the icon next to the question that interests you most. Study the tips given and try them out to engage learners in communication in English in your project lessons!

How can I ensure my questions are relevant to learners?

How else can I use questions to promote communication?

What kind of language should I use to make questions effective?

To ensure questions are relevant to learners, - use the word 'you' (e.g. What did you do?); - relate them to learners' interests (e.g. What would Taylor Swift say?); - encourage learners to come up with their own questions for discussion.

To promote communication, you can also use questions that - stimulate curiosity (e.g. What's in the secret sack today?); - encourage learners to make connections (e.g. How is ... different from ...?); - promote reflection (e.g. What was easiest/hardest today?)

To make questions effective, use - wh- questions (e.g. Why did you choose that? How do you like it? What do you think?); - multimodality (e.g. say the question and show it in writing, or accompanied by a picture to aid comprehension); - simple and direct language appropriate to learners' level.
