Doula Work: A Look Into the Wild
The term "doula" was first used in a book in 1969. The book is "The Prophetess" by Barbara Cohen and Bahija Lovejoy. In this novel, the term "doula" is used to refer to a female servant or midwife in ancient Israel. While the term has ancient origins, its use in modern contexts to describe a trained professional providing physical, emotional, and informational support to birthing individuals gained popularity later on. Doulas have a long history dating back centuries, providing support to women during childbirth in various cultures. The term "doula" originates from ancient Greece, referring to a woman who serves other women during labor and childbirth.
