Introduction
Before reading, we must understand a little about Sioux culture and Medicine Bags. The Lakota Sioux tribe was a powerful Plains tribe known for fighting against the US Army and hunting buffalo. They were deeply spiritual, believing in a great spirit: Wakan Tanka. The Medicine Bag, a small pouch that contains sacred items, is passed down through the males of each generation. It represents the family’s vision quest history and contains objects that symbolize personal or tribal identity. Medicine bags are typically worn under the clothing. The Medicine Bag in the story contains sage, which is historically used for cleansing and getting rid of negative energy.
Today, Lakota reservations are found in North and South Dakota. This story is realistic fiction, which means that the events could really happen, but they did not because the story is fiction. The characters act like real people–no superpowers, and the settings and problems are realistic–just like what we would encounter in our lives.
