Assignment

The Assignment Activity is the most common way to collect assessable work from your students, and provide feedback on that work. Students can submit written work such as essays or reports, audio and video files, and a wide range of other file types including computer programs, LaTeX and HTML. Students can submit as individuals or as groups. You can customise settings relating to submission dates/process, feedback and grades and provide feedback as annotations directly on a document, as comments in the activity, or via audio and video.

Monash ePortfolio

ePortfolios allow students to demonstrate critical self-reflection, skills and knowledge development. Students can create and present text and other content in their ePortfolio to showcase their learning journey. Monash ePortfolio is integrated with Moodle gradebook, allowing for easy marking and the ability to use Moodle's Advanced grading functions, such as marking guides.

FeedbackFruits

FeedbackFruits facilitates student-to-student peer feedback and pairs well with assessments or activities that require student group work or peer feedback. You can also build in steps for student self-reflection and self-assessment, and integrate AI tools to provide instant feedback on students’ comments and academic writing skills. FeedbackFruits is integrated with Moodle, allowing you to automatically import Moodle groups and quickly and easily set up group and peer feedback activities. Once students have commenced the activity, you can easily monitor student progress and will flag any potentially group dynamics.

Interactive H5P activities

H5P activities allow you to create a range of interactive content that can be embedded directly in Moodle. They can be used as asynchronous activities or guided sychronous activities to get students to reflect on what they have learned, self-assess and test their understanding. H5Ps can be used as graded activities where attempts will be marked automatically and count towards a student's mark in the Gradebook. However, H5P is not recommended for group work and other collaborative tasks, as there is no collective database and it has limited analytics.

Try testing your understanding with this interactive H5P quiz activity. You can attempt questions multiple times and check your answer to receive immediate feedback. There are four slides and a summary of your score at the end.

Polling tools

In-class polling can be a powerful and flexible tool for teaching with any size cohort and a great way of increasing student participation. For example, polling can be used to:

  • improve student engagement
  • test concepts prior to learning checks
You can also use polling tools outside of class to collect useful feedback for a range of uses, for example:
  • collecting feedback on areas students had the most difficulty with, so you can address them in the next class
  • collecting feedback on teaching delivery

Moodle Feedback activity types

Moodle Choice The choice activity enables you to ask a single question and offer a selection of possible responses. Choice results may be published after students have answered, after a certain date, or not at all. Results may be published with student names or anonymously. Moodle Survey The survey activity allows you to gather data from your students using a range of pre-populated questions. This tool provides anonymous responses. Moodle Feedback The Feedback activity allows you to create your own questions and results are not gradable. Moodle Questionnaire The questionnaire tool allows you to create a more granular and versatile area for students input. You may assign marks and scores to student responses, using the activity for formative feedback.

Forum

Moodle forums (other than the Announcement forum) facilitate communication and collaboration between you and your students and amongst each other. Educators can create discussion topics or allow students to generate topics. Forums can be used:

  • As a help centre where tutors and students can give advice
  • As one-on-one support area for private student-teacher communications (using a forum with separate groups and with one student per group)
  • For anonymous student posting and private replies, which can be useful to provide feedback to individual students (Open Forums).
  • For educators or students to rate posts as a form of peer evaluation
  • As a peer assessment tool where students can provide feedback on an individual student’s work or on collaborative work
  • Collect feedback on teaching delivery

Analytics reports

Moodle has a range of reports that may be used to track the behaviour of participants in a unit. Educators can utilise this information by making evidenced-informed decisions to adjust resources and scaffolding to optimise understanding and learning. This may identify at-risk students who can be provided with the appropriate support.
