Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Netherlandish Proverbs

The painting shows 126 different proverbs and idioms. These are like little puzzles where the pictures represent popular sayings from the 1500s .

The painting is super busy with lots of people, animals, and objects.

Many of the scenes in the painting are funny or silly. For example, there’s a man trying to bite a pillar, which means he’s trying to do something impossible

Some of the proverbs in the painting are not used anymore, so it’s like a time machine showing how people talked a long time ago

Bruegel often painted scenes of everyday peasant life, which is why he was nicknamed “Peasant Bruegel.” This painting is a great example of his detailed and lively style

Bruegel’s son, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, made at least 16 copies of this painting. So, there are many versions of it around the world
