Levi Strauss was a German salesman who imigrated to the United States with his family. He travelled to California when the Gold Rush started to sell strong canvas. He made strong pants for miners and opened a business. In 1870, Levi received a new blue material which was strong and cheap : denim (toile de Nîmes). Blue became the color of Levi's jeans.
