The Brown Institute for Media Innovation is established.

"I believe in the power of storytelling." - david brown

The Brown Institute for Media Innovation was established in 2012 to act as a launchpad for new ideas, endeavors, and campaigns that bring together journalism and technology. Designed with a view toward ensuring that these two fields could work together to generate positive and impactful ways of storytelling, the Institute is split between Stanford University in California and Columbia University in New York - David Brown's two alma maters. David believed deeply in the power of technology to push storytelling to new heights, and in the promise of storytelling to build an empthatic, inclusive - and fun! - future.

BridgeUP Begins

supporting the development of dreams, no matter big they may be.

BridgeUP started in 2013 with a pilot program, BridgeUP: CORE, established at the New York Public Library. The initial pilot became the catalyst to launch a host of other BridgeUP programs, including BridgeUP: Mental Health at the Menninger Clinic and BridgeUP: STEM at the American Museum of Natural History. Today, with support from the Helen Gurley Brown Foundation, BridgeUP has expanded from a single after-school program to multiple, interconnected programs that seek to expose young people to experiences, opportunities, and mentorship that will help them grow and succeed.

The entire BridgeUP Universe now consists of a multitude of programs and partnerships.

The Foundation is Established as the Pussycat Foundation.

"Dear Pussycat..."

The Helen Gurley Brown Foundation was established in 2010 as The Pussycat Foundation, named after Helen’s favorite term of endearment, and thanks to the trust of David and Helen Gurley Brown. Since then, the Foundation has been actively awarding grants to individuals and to fund programs from their inception.

David Brown passes away.

"Never be the first to arrive at a party or the last to go home, and never, ever be both." - David brown

David Brown passed away on February 1, 2010 at 93 years old. He'd had a brilliant career, having been responsible for putting on screen some of the most memorable and profitable film classics of recent times, including The Sting, which won an Oscar in 1973 for best film; Jaws (1975), which broke records and established its director Steven Spielberg; the highly praised Cocoon in 1985; Driving Miss Daisy, which won an Oscar for best picture in 1989; A Few Good Men, nominated as best film in 1992; the director Robert Altman's critically acclaimed 1992 Hollywood satire The Player; and Chocolat, nominated as best film of 2000. But above all, David was remembered by those who knew him as kind, generous, and devoted to his work and his wife, Helen.

2016 2017

BOLD Begins

CULTIVATING COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP IN WOMEN.

The BOLD Women's Leadership Network and BOLD Theater Women's Leadership Circle were the first of our BOLD programs to launch, with the idea of cultivating courageous leadership in women and helping them break the glass ceilings in their chosen fields, just like Helen did when she took over Cosmopolitan.

HELEN PASSES AWAY.

“Work with the raw material you have, namely you, and never let up.” - hgb

Helen passed on August 13, 2012, at 90 years old. She had been the Editor-in-Chief at Cosmopolitan for 32 years, remaining with the magazine in an advisory role until her death, and had published 8 books, a cookbook, and an LP. With her unabashed desire to nurther ambition, desire, and independence in young women, she had "played an important role in helping young women redefine their roles in society," per the New York Times, and with the establishment of the Foundation, she had ensured that this legacy would continue for years to come.
