Module 2 Try It
It can be hard to figure out what to listen for, and it also can be scary to prepare for a new quiz with a new instructor or in a new course. Use this ungraded activity as a practice quiz, to see if you understand the musical elements of rhythm and texture. Listen to each linked example before attempting to answer the questions. Congratulations!
You do not need to listen to the rest of the clip, but it is included in case you find it enjoyable. This large scherzo is written in a form similar to rondo: A B (brass) A C (slow) bridge A B coda. The piece ends with a “cry of despair” and a little hint of the hope that the composer will write into the final movements of this wonderful symphony. Mahler’s music, while lengthy, is very much in the style of movie music, very expressive and emotive, so you might be interested to give a listen. I could go on and on about this movement, but for this course, that is all we need!
