Cell Transport

How does our body regulate itself
Start

Next

This is the basic unit of life. Today will be exploring the cellular membrane click the blue button to zoom in and explore its functions.

This is a Cell

Next

  • It regulates the flow of molecules in and out
  • Protects your cell

This is the phospholipid bilayer.

Low Concentration

High Concentration

Cells regulate themselves two ways...

  • Passive Transport: When molecules move from areas of high concentration to low concentration. This takes no energy. There are three types: Diffusion, Facilitated Diffusion and Osmosis.
  • Active Transport: When molecules move from areas of low concentration to high. Often times this involves the moment of larger or charged particals through the membrane. This takes energy!

Next

Osmosis

The movement of water molecules from high levels of concentration to low levels of conentration

Facilitated Diffusion

The movement of molecules from high levels of concentration to low levels of conentration with the help of proteins.

Passive Transport

The movement of molecules from high levels of concentration to low levels of conentration

Diffusion

The movement of molecules from high levels of concentration to low levels of conentration

  • Hypertonic
  • Hypotonic
  • Isotonic

Remember there are ways your cells react to different concentrations of solutions.

Osmosis!

The Movement of water from areas of high concentration to low

+ info

The movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration.

Active Transport

  • This process requires the cells enery.
  • Often used to move large proteins.
  • This takes Energy!!! (ATP)
      This solution causes
      • The water will move from the solution into the cell.
      • The Cell will swell like a balloon filled with air.
      Hypotonic Solution

A solution where there is lower concentration of solutes and a higher concentration of water in the cell.

The Phospholipid Bilayer function is made up of phospholipids. The phospholipid is divided into two parts the hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail.

      Did you know?

      • There will be an equal amount of water leaving and entering the cell
      • Allows the cell to be in homeostatisis
      • The cell remains the same.

      This solution does

      Isotonic Solution

Is a solution where there is an equal concentration of solutes in the cell then outside of the cell.

Cells are affected by the amount of salt in any given solution. If a cell is in a salty environment (Hypertonic), it loses water. It's why drinking saltwater while on a deserted island is dangerous. It will dry you out.

Why is drinking too much salt water dangerous?

      • The water molecules to move outside of the cell and into the solution.
      • Afterwords the cell will shrivel like air out of a balloon.

Hypertonic solutions can be used to treat

      • Sore throats and mucus build up in the lungs.

      This solution causes

      Hypertonic Solutions

It is a solution where there is a higher concentration of solutes than there is water.
