Curriculum Design Process

The process of creating a curriculum includes planning formal learing experiences for a specific subject area. A formal plan is created with lessons and academic content. Listed are 7 helpful steps for designing a curriculum (Sharma N., 2024).

  1. Set the purpose
  2. Curriculum map
  3. Learner outcome expectations
  4. Arrange Content
  5. Set up delivery of curriculum
  6. Produce curriculum product
  7. Review and Assess

Summary of Curriculum Design Theory

  • Curriculum is defined by how and what a school or district decides should be learned and taught.
  • Process of examing different ideas and view of theorists for developing and creating a curriculum.
  • There are 6 curriculum design approaches that can be grouped as "technical & scientific" and "nontechnical & nonscientific" (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2016).

  • selecting, organizing, communication and supervising indivuduals who make curriculum decisions.

  • units and subunits are viewed as a whole
  • higher level staff members such as superintendent plan curriculum
  • concern for curriculum issues are for teh entire school/district not just by subject
  • Focus on study of education
  • emphasis on major trentds of curriculum
  • includes historical, philosophical, social, political topics
  • understanding of how knowledge is constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed

Curriculum Design models

The purpose for curriculum design models are to imporve student learning. Learning goals must be aligned in chronological order, making sure previous learning flows into the next. There are 3 desing models, subject, learner, and problem centered. Important to be knowlegable of all 3 models.

Subject-Centered

  • focus is on one particular subject, not on student
  • predetermind as to what is to be taught
  • subdivisions of core subjects
  • primarly use textbooks, e-books and computer programs

Learner-Centered

  • choices allow for own development of learning
  • must be able to balance student wants and interests
  • considers student needs, interests, and goals

Problem-Centered

  • Curriculum is relevant for student
  • students learn how to look at a problem and come up with solutions
  • exposure to real-life issues that develop skills
