PSY7001D: Cognitive Psychology
Want to recap the assessment criteria first?
Use this game to help you better understand the criteria your protocol needs to meet. Read the following ideas and decide whether you think they would meet the assessment criteria!
Start
Your protocol must be based on a cognitive topic using the cognitive psychology approach. Remember that you need to be able to use cognitive models and theories throughout your background summary. You should ensure that you are looking at cognitive psychology journals to make sure the research you're reading is from a cognitive approach. Be careful to avoid drifting into biopsychology, neuropsychology, or other areas of psychology as this will mean you're going off topic. Your protocol must be based on a true experiment. A true experiment is an experiment in which participants can be randomly allocated to different experimental conditions. The only exception to this rule is when using a within-subjects design where all participants take part in all conditions. A true experiment can also establish cause and effect by having a clear control condition.

- This has a lot of different elements to it with some cognitive aspects such as perception and decision-making, but also less relevant factors such as trustworthiness which becomes more social psychology focussed. This makes the idea overcomplicated and lose focus. This would mean the background section would not be fully focused on relevant cognitive models and theories which is required.

- This is not a true experiment as participants cannot be randomly allocated into the bilingual or monolingual group. This variable cannot be directly manipulated.
- It's not clear what is meant by 'cognitive flexibility' or where the measure would come from. It's important to be specific with the cognitive topic you have chosen as this will allow you to discuss the relevant cognitive models and theories

- This is not a true experiment. It appears to be correlational, looking at the relationship between attention and social media which means it cannot establish cause and effect. A true experiment should be able to determine cause and effect.
- The experiment uses electrophysiological methods rather than experimental cognitive psychology methods. The experiment needs to be grounded in cognitive psychology for this assessment.
