Why Conserve Water?

Over 70% of our planet is water, so why do we need to consider water conservation? For drinking, growing crops and feeding livestock, not just any water will do. We need clean, unpolluted water. Scientists estimate that humans will run into a water shortage by 2080 if we do not conserve now.

Reasons to conserve:
  • It takes energy to clean and transport water, so conserving water means saving energy.
  • Reducing what we use keeps water where it's needed: in wetland and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Saving water, saves you money - especially if you have a water meter.

On average, each person uses 140L of water per day.

Why conserve water?
Never brush your teeth with the tap on!
Top Tips for Water Conservation

  • Cool water in the fridge, rather than running the tap.
  • Put lids on boiling pots to avoid evaporation.
  • Only run appliances when they're full.
  • Use a washing up and a rinsing bowl to avoid running the tap.
...in the bathroom:
...in the garden:
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
  • Fix a dripping tap.
  • Get water-saving taps.
  • Shower instead of bathe.
  • Only flush when necessary.
  • Don't water your grass.
  • Catch rainfall in a water butt.
  • Spread mulch in the flower beds to reduce evaporation.
