Level 5 Unit 7 Lesson 2
Discuss how some of these sources could be reduced.
What are some sources of pollution?
Vocabulary
global warming: a slow increase in Earth's temperature.
Scientists worry that global warming will destroy the planet.
It is better to recycle than to throw away used bottles.
to throw away: to get rid of unwanted or unneeded items.
trash: waste products produced and thrown away by humans.
The bin was overfull of trash and needed emptying.
to reduce: to make smaller or less in amount or size.
Humans must reduce the amount of greenhouse gas in the air to stop global warming.
greenhouse gas: gases or chemicals in the air that contribute to global warming.
emissions: the gas or chemicals that end up in the air.
Burning fossil fuels creates the most emissions.
The factory emissions are dangerously high.
factory: where production of materials and use of fossil fuels takes place.

Amazon Aid
When we think about problems for the Amazon Rainforest, most people are concerned with deforestation. But deforestation is not the Amazon's biggest problem. The Amazon Rainforest is drying out. Climate change has caused global warming, leading to drought. Two recent droughts, in 2005 and 2010 were very significant in the Amazon.
Amazon Aid
Scientists are able to measure the impact of these two droughts on trees in the Amazon: core samples show smaller than normal rings in the tree core during droughts, this means the tree growth slowed during these times. In fact, the dryer climate means growth is slowing overall. We can also see that Amazonian trees live less long now, than in the past.
Amazon Aid
The dryer climate means the forest is changing, as plant species that favor the previous wet climate within the Amazon die out, replaced by robust vegetation that can grow with less water. Changing plant life, naturally means the animals who live in the Amazon must adapt or die out as well.
Amazon Aid
Not only are people clear-cutting and burning trees in the Amazon, but the dryer climate is causing forest fires, too. Even the moist canopy of the rainforest can't prevent fires quickly spreading along the forest floor. Some fires help refresh forests, but not when people are changing large sections of the burnt Amazon into farmland.

Amazon Aid
The Amazon Rainforest is an important resource for the whole planet. The trees slow the human impact on the environment by cleaning greenhouse gases from the air. It is also home to the largest diversity of animal and plant species on Earth. It is a natural resource worth protecting!
5. Why is the Amazon Rainforest important?
4. What do trees do for us?
3. Overall, is the Amazon wetter or dryer than before?
2. How do scientists measure the impact of a drought on a forest?
1. Based on the context, define 'deforestation.'
