After sharing a workspace with Meucci, Bell stole the device and sold it to Wester Union himself. Together with Western Union, Bell brought the telephone to market.Meucci could not afford to renew his temporary patent. Bell stepped in to claim the patent in 1874, listing himself as inventor of the telephone.Meucci died trying to prove his part in the invention of the telephone. Bell will erase Meucci's life work in the shadow of this true scandal.

Meucci's money problems prevented the Italian from applying for patent. He could not afford $250 to apply, and so in 1871 he bought a temporary patent for just three years.Medical issues and poor English also stopped Meucci's success. Meucci tried to make a deal with Western Union to develop his product, but was sadly rejected.

In response to the sad death of defendant, Antonio Meucci, yesterday the US Supreme Court has closed the case against Alexander Graham Bell. Bell was charged with fraud for stealing Meucci's work and patenting a machine he did not invent. Bell will keep the telephone patent and live in history as the great inventor of this device.Just days ago, the court heard that Meucci publicly demonstrated his 'teletrofono' in New York City in 1860, years before Bell's patent.
