Finding Fun Fitness

For many years, Pru's main exercise was running. She was bored with running, but needed to stay in shape to maintain a healthy weight and for her mental health. Pru knew that by being health conscious and eating a balanced diet, she would not suffer with poor health.

Trudy asked Pru to join yoga. Pru thought it might be a fun change from running. The two friends bent and stretched until Pru fell asleep doing 'downward dog'! Yoga wasn't the most exciting exercise, maybe it wasn't what Pru needed. Anyway, Pru enjoyed working out outdoors.

Finding Fun Fitness

Pru asked her friend Drew for ideas. Drew had a healthy lifestyle. He suggested mountain biking. Pru borrowed a bike and went out with Drew. Mountain biking was hard work! Pru did not feel strong enough to pedal up steep hills. She biked off course and nearly crashed into a tree!

Finding Fun Fitness

Pru shared her emotions about mountain biking with Drew. They discussed more fitness ideas over a nutrient-filled lunch. Drew also enjoyed surfing, but Pru didn't have the energy for swimming. Hiking? Rock climbing? What could she do?

Finding Fun Fitness

What about canoeing? Drew had a canoe, they could use alone or in two! Pru loved the water, and she would be able to stay dry. Paddling was great exercise and peace on the water was like therapy. It was perfect! These days, if you ever need Pru, look first on the lake for a canoe!

  1. Pru seems to focus on one form of exercise. Is this good? Why (not)?
  2. Is it better to do exercise alone or with others? Why?
  3. Describe your favorite fitness activity. Why do you like it?

The Food Pyramid

How do we know which foods to eat to stay healthy? The Food Pyramid is an easy way to see what we should eat. Doctors and scientists agree that the human diet should be about 55% grains, vegetables and fruit. These foods are full of nutrients, vitamins and energy.

The Food Pyramid

We build and maintain strong muscles by eating meat and fish. These should make up about 25% of our diet. Some people do not eat meat, but can gain the same nutrients from beans and legumes. For a balanced diet, it is important to eat some kind of protein.

The Food Pyramid

It can be unhealthy to eat too much fatty cheese and dairy, because they can cause obesity. Eating some dairy helps to maintain healthy teeth and bones and is a dietary requirement. People should include about 15% dairy in their diets.

The Food Pyramid

Oils, cakes and sweets are often comfort foods, but they should usually be avoided. Too much of this food can cause your health to suffer, and you to become overweight. Doctors advise that only 5% of our diet is junk food. Now that's a challenge!
