Field Friends

Before the Marriage Act of 1836, couples in England had to be married by an Anglican minister for their marriage to be legally accepted. If they were not married by the Church, they had no rights as a couple, for example, if the husband died, the wife did not inherit his money and things.

Field Friends

Many people across England and Wales were not Anglican. They may have been another faith, or none at all. Many people did not have money for a church wedding, or could not travel to the church. These people started their own marriage rules.

Jump the Broom

Field Friends

From as early as 1764, informal marriages occurred. Extended families celebrated these marriages in small ceremonies. They laid a broom on the ground, and after special words are said, both man and woman jump over the broom, becoming husband and wife.

Civil marriage, or weddings performed and agreed by law, rather than church, started in 1836. Some couples still choose broomstick marriages today! Some African American couples jump the broomstick as a celebration of their culture and with love for their ancestors.
