YOUR TASK
The first settlers to come here were all men. Their life was really hard - harsh conditions, frequent attacks, lack of food and other supplies. Most of them died instead of getting rich. Despite these facts, the Virginia Company, an English trading company which had sent the settlers, wanted to earn as much money as possible by persuading more and more people to travel to America. They wanted to preserve the colony by providing the men there with brides and created quite a big campaign to motivate women to to Jamestowne and even paid for their passage. The authors of the first writings about the new settlements, Captain John Smith being among them, also embellished their stories a bit to attract the potential travellers.
You are members of the PR (public relations) department of Virginia Company. Your task is to come up with a poster describing the life in the colony, persuading new people currently living in Britain to come and settle in Jamestowne – you cannot lie openly, however, you do not want the harsh conditions to discourage the potential customers of yours. Try to present the colony in a way which will attract especially women (preferably young and suitable for marriage).
Your poster has to contain:
- the basic facts about the colony
- a catchy slogan attracting women
- description of the conditions you have to fulfil to set off on the journey to the New World
