Prereading

“Did you hear the news?” A short girl with freckles was talking loudly. “Zack’s dad just got a new job and he’s moving away.” Allen smiled, “Well, it looks like I am the first alternate now.”
The next day Allen decided that if he couldn’t be the lead, then he didn’t want to be in the musical at all. He walked toward the music room to try and find the director, but there was a group standing outside the room blocking the door.

Level 6 Unit 10 Lesson 1

Poem

Allen thought about his role as first alternate. He decided that he would love to be asked to play the villain. He would be able to sing along with Mark, and everyone would see how much better he was. Allen knew that if he had the chance, he could really steal the show from Mark. He spent the day thinking about how he could convince Larry to want to quit the musical.

Level 6 Unit 10 Lesson 1

Poem

Mark gave his friend a strange look. “I hope you’re not thinking of doing anything to hurt the musical.” Allen shook his head and quickly said, “Of course not.”
He met Mark before rehearsal and his friend gave him a big high five. “You’re first alternate now. That’s the most important role in the musical.” “Nothing is more important than the lead,” Allen replied. “You know you will always be the biggest star, but hopefully I’ll get a chance to show what I can do.”

Foreshadowing

Do you think something will happen to get Allen out of the chorus?

The director smiled. “Well, hopefully nothing will happen that will make us need to use you.”
The director came out and found Allen. “You’ve got the most important role in the musical now,” he said. “You have to learn all of the lines for the whole show and be ready to fill in for anyone at any time.” Allen smiled again. “Don’t worry. I already know all of the lyrics, and I can learn the dance moves easily. I’m a great dancer.”
