Long ago, the world was traveled by sailors, but these sailors didn’t have any tools to navigate. Navigation was usually done using the stars. The North Star, called Polaris, is always found in the same spot in the sky, so it was used to determine the direction that ships needed to sail. However, during cloudy weather and during the day, this method didn’t work.

Iron ore is mined from the earth.
The first compass was invented in China between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD. It was made of lodestone, which is a magnetic iron ore found near the surface of the Earth. It is not certain why lodestone is magnetic. Some scientists believe it becomes magnetic when it is struck by lightning.

If a needle made of lodestone is set on a pin and allowed to spin freely, it will always point north. This allows anyone who is traveling to know where north is, even during the day and in a rainstorm. The earliest compasses were not used for navigation but instead for fortune-telling and divination. The Chinese also used the compass to determine where to build houses or plant crops. The compass wasn’t used as a navigational aid until around the 9th century.

The compass changed navigation for ships and airplanes and is a necessary tool for anyone who goes camping, hiking, or walking in the woods. Now we can download an app with a compass for our smartphones that uses a device to search for Earth’s magnetic field. A compass truly was an essential device for navigating in the past. It’s nice to know that we can always use a compass to get around if we can't find a Wi-Fi signal.
