Prereading

These days, we find Wi-Fi everywhere we go. It is such a basic part of our lives that we don’t even think about where it comes from or how it was invented. It is amazing to learn that the basic idea of Wi-Fi was invented by an actress at the beginning of World War II.Hedy Lamarr was born in Hungary on November 9, 1914, and lived a normal life. She grew up, got married, but then ran away from her husband to find a new life in France.

On a trip to London, she met with the owner of MGM Studios, and he gave her a movie contract in Hollywood. She became a film star in 1938 and began to gain fame. However, as World War II was starting, she felt that she couldn’t sit in Hollywood making money while the world was falling apart.

Before she was an actress, Hedy learned a lot about weapons from her ex-husband, who was an ammunition manufacturer. She used this information to help the Navy during the war. They were using radio-controlled torpedoes, but the signal was easily jammed, which made the torpedoes go off course. Lamarr created a frequency that could not be tracked, so the torpedoes would not be sent off course.

Her invention was not used during the World War, but in 1962, the Navy began to use her design to guide missiles. The principles of this frequency were used to develop Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi technology. Her work was the starting point for many of the technologies we use for all of our daily functions now.
