Prereading
For many years, people have looked up to the skies and wondered if other life forms exist somewhere in the galaxy. In 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space when he orbited the Earth in a spacecraft. The space race began and humans visited the moon in 1969. Since then, major improvements have been made to space travel, and many discoveries have been made.

In 1976, the Viking 1 lander made it to Mars, and since this date, scientists have been determined to learn everything about the red planet. In 2012, the Curiosity rover found evidence of an ancient streambed inside a crater, which proved that water used to flow on Mars. In 2020, the Perseverance rover arrived on Mars, analyzed soil samples, looked for life, and sent us amazing photos of the surface of the planet.

Many countries are also working together to study what happens when humans spend a lot of time in space. Operations on the International Space Station (ISS) began in 1998 and currently orbits the Earth sixteen times every day. Scientists on the ISS perform medical experiments, analyze data, and work on growing plants and crops in space.

Another major development in space travel is space tourism. In 2021, a few billionaires were able to travel into space for 11 minutes. Currently many companies are trying to develop trips into space for everyone. In 2021, 146 rockets were launched into space and there will probably be more launches than that in 2022. The future possibilities for space travel and the things that might be discovered certainly are exciting.
