The pyramids are visited by many tourists every year.

Just outside of the capital city of Egypt stand three awe-inspiring ancient pyramids. These pyramids were built as tombs for three different pharaohs in the 26th century BC. The largest pyramid, called the Great Pyramid, is 138.5 meters tall, and its base is a square that is 230 square meters. Inside the pyramid are three chambers and many passages that connect the rooms of the pyramid.

About 500 kilometers south of the pyramids is the Valley of the Kings, a valley where the kings of Egypt from the 16th to 11th century BC were buried. In the year 1922, an amazing discovery was made there by the archaeologist Howard Carter. He discovered an almost perfectly preserved tomb of the famous King Tut.

King Tutankhamun was born in 1333 BCE and became king when he was just eight or nine years old. He was the last person in his family to rule. He only ruled about nine years before his untimely death. Scientists do not agree about how King Tut died. He had many health problems, had caught malaria, and had an infected foot. It is also possible that he was murdered by blows to the head.

King Tut's face mask was found inside his tomb.

Within the tomb found by Howard Carter, there were many items that are currently on display in museums. There was a solid gold coffin, oils, food, sheets, trumpets, and a special dagger. There is also a beautifully designed face mask and a small, well-preserved mummy of King Tut’s body. Every year, thousands of people travel to Egypt to see these amazing artifacts from an ancient time period.
