What do you think is the most difficult job?

Prereading

My name is Colin and I am a server at a casual resteraunt. I have a lot of work to do every day, but I really love my job. My day starts early and I get up before 5 am. I work at a diner during the breakfast shift, and I clock in at 6 am and work until 2 pm. When I get to work, the restaurant is usually pretty empty, so I spend the first hour restocking all of the food. I make sure we have enough soda and juice, brew a pot of coffee and fill up the sugar, salt and pepper shakers.

Around seven, the restaurant starts to fill up. The host brings the guests to their table and first I have to ask what drinks they want. In the morning, almost everyone wants coffee. After I bring the coffee out, I take the orders and then bring them their food. While the people are eating, I make sure the food was prepared correctly and that the guests have everything they need. Then I wipe the tables down, fill up the salt and pepper shakers and put out new silverware.

At eleven, the cooks make the soup of the day and we begin serving lunch. During the lunch service, I have to make a lot of salads and hand out a lot of soup. On Fridays we have fish fried in tasty sauce and fresh bread. I walk from the kitchen to the dining room about a thousand times a day, and sometimes I don’t sit down the whole shift. I think I made forty-five pots of coffee last Saturday.

At two, my shift is over, but I still have to tidy up the serving area. Every server has a list of side work to do, to make sure that everything we use stays clean. I usually have to clean the coffee pots and vacuum the floors. My job is very physically demanding, but I love it. Every day is different and I get to talk to a lot of people all day. I love helping people have a great meal.
