Where can a detective find clues?
Prereading
Carrie inhaled the strong smell of cologne and gasped. She turned to face Paul and pointed at him. “This is your cologne,” she shouted. Paul smiled and waved his hand in the air. “Yes, it’s a signature scent that I buy from London.” “It means you were in the design room! You took the red binder.” Paul thought for a moment and then answered. “I was in the design room, at lunch. I forgot all about it. I came in to pick up the pictures of the new skirts.”
Everyone waited for Paul to say what he had done with the red binder, but he just shrugged. “I didn’t see the red folder though. It wasn’t here when I came in.” Mindy raised her eyebrows and looked around the room. "If you ask me, it is certain that one of you did it. You all saw the binder today and I'm sure one of you took it." Ms. Carmel crossed her arms and gave Mindy a look, “She's right. Carrie, Paul, and Matt, you all add an opportunity to steal the binder today. None of you will leave the building until I get the binder back."
Mindy followed the group out of the design room and then turned to go back to her office. She made sure that no one was watching her and then opened her desk drawer and pulled out the red folder. She tucked it into her bag, between a blue folder and her grey sweater. Then she walked quickly out into the hall. She smiled as she pushed the door open and started to step outside of the office.
Do you think Mindy will escape with the binder?
Predict
Mindy took a step onto the street and was immediately knocked over by the mailman, who was running into the building. Mindy flew backwards and her bag fell to the ground. The red binder slid out of her bag and inside the building. It slid across the floor and landed right in front of Ms. Carmel’s office. Inside she heard everyone gasp. Ms. Carmel ran out and shouted, “You? You stole the folder?” “No!” Mindy lied. “It was the mailman. He must be the spy from L’moda.” Ms. Carmel shook her head and then pointed at the door. “I can’t believe my trusted secretary would try to fool everyone like this. Get out of here and don’t ever come back.” Ms. Carmel looked back into her office. "I am so sorry that I suspected all of you. All of the clues we found all day were nothing but red herrings."
Did you ever suspect Mindy?
