Would you like to be the CEO of a big company?
Prereading
My name is Karen and I am the CEO of a global clothing company. I have a lot of work to do every day, but I really love my job. I start my day early. I almost always show up in the office before 8 a.m. I always have a meeting every morning with my senior staff, where we discuss everything that we need to do during the day. After the meeting, I usually have a cup of coffee with cream in my office. When I finish my coffee, my secretary brings me my phone messages and I spend the next two hours on the phone.
After I make all of the phone calls, I often have tripled the number of things I have to do. I call another meeting with the staff from my office and assign these jobs to everyone. I usually have a lot more meetings during the day. I often have to talk to store owners, clothing designers and fabric manufacturers. I have to go down to the warehouse and make sure that the clothing was shipped to the stores. I have to make sure the cloth was picked up and that the clothing was made correctly.
Sometimes I go down to the city center for lunch meetings. Lunch meetings are the best because I get to go out to excellent restaurants, but also get some work done. Sometimes I have two lunch meetings on the same day! I have to make sure I don’t fill up at the first one, so that I can still eat something at the second. Meetings during lunch are usually more relaxed, but I have to finish the meetings quickly, so I can get back up to the office.
When my lunch meetings are finished, I go back up to the office, which is on the 33rd floor of a beautiful high-rise building. In the afternoon, I might have appointments with designers who want to make clothes for my company. I might go to look at locations for our next fashion show. I sometimes go to the stores just to see how the clothes look and make sure everything is running smoothly. I try to finish work by 6 p.m. every day, but I often still have tasks to do and have to stay later. I work a lot of hours and sometimes my work is very stressful, but I would never give up. I love getting to pick out what the latest fashion will be.
