Prereading

The steam engine puffed out a huge black cloud of smoke above the flat, dry land. The train chugged past the towering cacti, moving slowly but steadily. Jesse looked at Bill, who nodded and pushed his hat down on his head. The two outlaws kicked their horses and galloped toward the back of the train. They caught up with the train and rode alongside it until they reached the engine.

Railroad Adventure

Jesse grabbed the side of the train and let it pull him off the horse into the engine car. A small man with a dark beard who was wearing overalls jumped backwards. He put his hands up and dropped the shovel he was holding. Jesse pulled out his gun and pointed at the coal that was on the shovel. “Stop the train,” he commanded.

Bill jumped off his horse one car behind the engine. He found the conductor talking to some passengers. “I know you’ve got the money from the Swift Bank on this train,” Bill said loudly. He pulled out his pistol and said. “I need you to open the safe.” The conductor was a tall man with a thick mustache. He looked at Bill with fear in his eyes. “I don’t have the key,” the conductor said.

Jesse opened his bag and pulled out some dynamite. "We don't need the key. I'll start setting up the explosives. Bill, you tie these two up and then go check on the passengers." Bill pulled out his rope and tied the conductor and the coal shoveler to the side of the train.

In the fourth car, Ruth felt the train start to slow down and grabbed her friend’s hand. “Quick Maggie, put your earrings in your shoe.” She pulled off her earrings and tucked them into the top of her tall shoe. Maggie looked confused. “What’s happening?” she asked. “The train is being robbed,” Ruth explained. “Hurry.”

Maggie put her diamond earrings into her shoe and then sat back to wait anxiously. A few moments later, a tall, dirty man with long dark hair and a black hat came into the train car. He held a pistol out in front of him and announced, “Okay, ladies and gentlemen. Give me all of your money and nobody will get hurt. I’ll also take any watches, earrings and necklaces. Just put it all right here in the sack.
