Prereading

The first automobile with a gasoline engine was invented by Carl Benz in 1879. This car had two seats, three wheels, and amazed people who were used to traveling by horse and buggy. In 1913, Henry Ford discovered a way to mass-produce automobiles. He used an assembly line to make cars quickly and cheaply. This allowed many people to become drivers. This started the boom in individual transportation. Now there are over 1 billion passenger cars in the world.
Airbags save many lives every year.
Over the years, cars have gotten faster, bigger, and safer. In 1959, cars started using seat belts. In the 1970s, airbags were introduced as a safety measure in case of crashes. In 1978, anti-lock brakes were invented, allowing drivers to stop without sliding on snow and ice. Cars today have electronic sensors, cameras, and multiple automatic accident avoidance systems.
For a long time, cars only used gasoline as their source of power. Gasoline is expensive, poisonous, and creates a lot of pollution, so engineers are constantly looking for alternative fuel sources. A gas made from corn has been invented, as well as engines that run on water, steam, and air. However, the most popular new invention is an electric car or a hybrid car that uses both electricity and gasoline
Another exciting invention is the driverless car. Currently, driverless cars are being developed in all parts of the world. A driverless fleet of taxis is operating in China and Las Vegas. A driverless truck made a nighttime trip to Phoenix with no problems. There is no doubt that self-driving cars will soon become normal everywhere. These vehicles will allow people to sleep, eat, read, or study while they are traveling around their city and will change the way we think about commuting.
  1. Describe a car from 1879.
  2. Describe a car from present day.
  3. Describe what you think a car will be like in 2050.
