Prereading

Nowadays, flying around the world in an airplane is an event that happens every day. However, just a little over a hundred years ago, the idea of flying was just a dream. The Wright brothers were the first people in the world to fly a plane with a person on it. In 1903 in North Carolina, the brothers flew a plane 120 feet for 12 seconds. This was just the start of a huge interest in flying. The Wright Brothers' experiment was repeated until flying became commonplace.
Old planes were often wooden and very dangerous.
Over the next years, inventors and engineers began developing different airplanes. Most of them were small, wooden biplanes with two sets of wings. They flew slowly and were difficult to navigate. There were many accidents, and the planes could not fly very far. In 1919, Captains Alcock and Brown were the first people to fly nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean. They traveled from Northern Canada to Ireland, a distance of 1,890 kilometers. The trip took almost 16 hours to complete and had many close calls.
In 1914, the first flight with paying customers took off from St. Petersburg, Florida and landed in Tampa, about 17 miles away. Since this date, over 5,000 airline companies have started operating in the skies. Currently, the longest non-stop trip is from Singapore to Los Angeles, which takes 17 hours and 50 minutes. The shortest flight, which takes you between some islands in Scotland, lasts less than 2 minutes.
Airplanes have truly changed the way people are able to move around the world. We now have the ability to arrive anywhere on the globe in less than a day, meaning that people are never far from their families or their work. In the past years, many low-cost airlines have started operating, allowing everyone access to flights to popular destinations. Airplanes found a way to make the world smaller and completely connected.
  1. Who flew in the first manned flight?
  2. Which ocean was the first ocean that people flew over?
  3. Where is the shortest flight in the world?
  4. How have aeroplanes brought the world together?
