The subway, sometimes called the metro, underground, tube, or train, is a rapid transit system used to help people get around the city. The train runs on two rails, and the third rail provides electricity to the train. Within the city, subways usually travel underground and can pass under rivers and highways. Sometimes, the trains come above ground for short distances. In some cities, like Chicago, almost the entire system is above the streets on elevated tracks.
People travel through the tunnels to get to their subway train.
The first subway system in the world was built in London and opened on January 10, 1863. The line used steam engines and traveled only 6 kilometers through the center of the city. Three years later, the city began to build the tunnels that are still used on "the tube" today. The trains helped thousands of people travel to work in the city quickly and conveniently. Before the subway, cities were very crowded with workers. After they built the subways, people could live in the suburbs and commute to work on the train.
Other cities around the world soon built their own underground rail systems. There are 178 different metro systems in the world. Many of them run 24 hours a day, providing citizens with a quick, safe, and reliable way to travel. Sometimes the maps look disorganized because the subway grew along with the city. Currently, the Shanghai Metro is the world’s longest metro system, with 803 kilometers of tracks. This metro system provides 2.83 billion rides through the city every year.
The metro system truly is an achievement that has changed the way our cities work. Subways unify the people who live in an area and allow them to travel everywhere in the city. Engineers had to figure out how to build large, strong tunnels under the city streets without running into the water lines, electric lines, sewers, and cables. People rely on these metro lines to get to work every day, so they must be kept in good condition and be sure to run every day without stopping.
  1. The subway is a transporation system in the air.
  2. Most subways have three rails.
  3. Subways systems stayed the same size while the cities grew.
  4. Subways bring people in a city together.
