Saving the Iberian Lynx

In the western part of Europe is the Iberian Peninsula, a place with many mountain ranges, lots of forests and plenty of beaches. This peninsula is where the Iberian lynx is found. The lynx is a short spotted cat with long ears. It used to live all over the peninsula, but now mainly stays in the mountains. Unfortunately, the lynx is also an endangered species due to illness, loss of habitat and loss of food.

The Iberian lynx almost exclusively eats the European rabbit, which used to be found all over the peninsula. But this rabbit has also had its population severely lowered by hunters who catch the rabbit for food. The European rabbit has also suffered from a fatal illness which causes it to die. Without the rabbit to eat, the Iberian lynx began to explore in new territory to find food.

A lynx looks for a rabbit to eat.

As soon as the lynx moved closer to the cities, many were killed in traffic accidents. When the lynx came close to people, it developed bacteria which can not be killed by medicines. The lynx now has many illnesses. Humans are also building their cities in the habitat where the lynx live, which causes them to have to move to places they are not able to survive.

People are working to conserve and restore the lynx’s habitat, but until they find a different food that the lynx can eat, the animal will still be endangered. People are also constantly building houses in the natural habitats. Many organizations are working together to save this beautiful animal. When people begin to protect the habitat of the lynx, this animal will be able to survive.
