What animals live in Africa?
Prereading
The End of the White Rhino

In the southern part of Africa, along with the dry plains and tall grass, lived the white rhino. The white rhino is the second largest land animal, and is only smaller than the elephant. It has a massive head with a broad mouth and a long, distinctive horn at the edge of its head. Unfortunately, hunting has destroyed the rhino's population and there are only two left. Provided that humans are successful, the rhino can be saved.

They are both female and live in protected land in Kenya. The rhinos have armed guards watching them all day

The rhino's large horn is quite valuable.

For many years, people poached the rhinos in order to get their horn. The horn is used in traditional medicine to remove toxins from the body. The horn is also seen as a status symbol, so many rich people want a rhino horn as a trophy. People hunted so many rhinos that the population was completely destroyed. There are now only two white rhinos left in the world.

Scientist believe that the white rhino has ancestors that are seven million years old, so they really want to save this species from extinction. Scientists are producing embryos from genetic material from the last male rhino, who died in 2018. At this moment, they have five embryos and hope to be able to save this unique species. Unless the embryos become babies, the white rhino will become extinct.

The white rhinos are in a dangerous situation right now. Years of illegal hunting have left these ancient animals on the brink of extinction. Now that people know about this problem, many groups are trying to make sure the poaching stops. Scientist are also trying to reproduce new rhinos. As long as people learn about these problems, we can make sure it doesn't happen to other animals.
