Home (part III)

The sun has dropped below the towering mountain in the distance. The snow at the top of the peaks turns dark red and bright orange. I see the same bold colors as the flowers in the garden. It’s the end of summer so the nights are getting cold. I pull out the blanket from under my chair and wrap it around me. Kayla toddles inside to watch TV.

I look out toward the tall peaks and I can see three deer running across the field of grass. They have to come closer to the house now that the construction trucks are in the forest. They run gracefully and their cute white tails flip up and down. The wolf howls again and the deer freeze. The smallest deer jumps suddenly and then they all take off toward the trees.

A hawk flies by low and close to the house. We can hear the birds in the trees chirp and chatter. I built a birdhouse for the wrens, and I watch the couple come home for the night. We make sure they always have seeds or old bread to eat. I like to think they are my pets. Their babies left the nest a few weeks ago. I hope they aren’t too lonely.

Macy closes her book and walks slowly up to the porch. She sits on the step and leans back against her grandma’s legs. “It’s so beautiful here,” she says. “It’s too bad that it is so far away.” “Don’t worry,” I tell her. “As soon as they finish the highway, we’ll be able to get to the city in half an hour.”
