Home (part II)

The girls will only be here for another three days before their mom comes to take them back to the city. I’m proud of her. She has a good job and a wonderful family, but I do wish that she would spend more time on the land. Neither she nor her brother want to live here. They say it is too far from the city. But soon they will finish building the highway that will cut right through the forest and run next to the house.

If I look toward the back of the house, I can see the construction. Every day it moves a little closer. They cut down a giant section of the forest to build the road. The forest was thick and full tall pine trees with sharp needles. Wildflowers cover the hills and a thin stream trickles through the trees. There’s a deep pool where we used to swim, for my dad and his friend built a dam when they were young. I can’t walk to the pool anymore; it’s on the other side of the new highway.

Trudy comes out and asks if she can ride the horse tomorrow. I promise her that if she helps her gramma make breakfast, we’ll go out for a ride right after. She sits for a moment and looks at the yard, but jumps up as soon as she sees the ants. She runs back inside and I soon hear the noise of the television.

Kayla toddles back up the stairs onto the porch and sits down on the step. Her grandma comes out with a tin of chocolate chip cookies and sits in the chair beside me. We eat our treat in calm silence. A wolf howls and Kayla laughs nervously. She asks me if the wolf is close. I tell her it's more afraid of us than we are of it.

I had the pleasure of eating at Mario’s Fresh Fish restaurant this past Friday and I want to share the wonderful experience. The restaurant was incredibly clean and all of the ingredients were amazingly fresh. Mario cooked us delicious, crispy fried fish with a rich, creamy garlic sauce. You can choose between coleslaw, boiled potatoes or steamed broccoli for a side.
