The ants have found the watermelon that Trudy dropped while she was having a snack on the porch. Their minuscule legs carry their tiny bodies in a long, straight line. Their organization amazes me when I think of how minute their brains are. I watch them marching forward, following the miniature ant in front of them on the long walk toward their sugary reward. Kayla toddles out and squats to watch them. She sticks her little finger into the fruit and tries to grab one of the itty-bitty insects.
She follows their trail, which takes her to their enormous ant hill in the garden. The giant dahlias are in full bloom. Their immense dark red and vibrant purple petals tower over the dry grass. The bees this year have been massive. There is one with a wide, black stripe that is loud enough to hear from the porch. Sometimes the tiny hummingbirds come after dinner. I hope I’ll see one tonight.
Behind the flowers, there’s an old shed where I keep my tools. I used to work on something every night after dinner. I made that old sign above the door and the post next to the window that holds our coats. I don’t make much anymore. My eyes are tired, and my hands hurt. I prefer to spend the evening watching the sunset.
I look out into the front yard, where Macy is reading under the bushy oak tree with the last light of the day. My great-great-grandfather planted that tree when he and his wife moved onto this rocky land. They had a tough life, but they did well. It was a lonely life and the nearest neighbors were a day’s ride away, yet they were able to succeed.
