What challenges might an athlete face?

Oksana Masters is a paralympic athlete from Ukraine who competes for the United States. She was born June 19th, 1989 near the Cherynobal nuclear disaster. As a result of radiation from the accident, she was born with severe birth defects. She had legs that are different length, and was missing her shin bones. She also has webbed fingers, no thumbs and six toes on each foot. When she was born, Oksana’s parents abandoned her at an orphanage. When she was seven, Oksana was adopted by a professor from the United States.

Learningsession

In the United States she received many operations to help her, but both legs were eventually amputated because they could not support her weight. At this time, she began doing adaptive rowing. She qualified for the paralympic games in 2012 and won a bronze medal. After winning this medal, she suffered a back injury and had to stop doing competitive rowing.

Learningsession

However, she did not stop competing. She began training in paracycling and cross-country skiing. In the 2018 Paralympic Games, she won five medals, including a gold medal in the 5 kilometer sitting event. She went on to win a gold medal in the 2020 Paralympics in hand-cycling.

Learningsession

Oksana now participates in many events to encourage young women to join sports. She often runs in charitable races and contributes a lot of time to the Team for Tomorrow campaign. This program allows her to spread the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect by giving back to their communities. Oksana is a true sports hero, who has overcome incredible odds to become successful and influence those around her.
