A sports hero is someone who . . .

Yulimar Rojas is an athlete who currently holds the world record in women’s triple jump. She is often called “The Queen of the Triple Jump” because she has broken so many records in this event. She has also had a difficult life, and truly shows what it means to face difficulties and overcome them to succeed. Yulimar was born on October 21st, 1995 in Venezuela. She grew up in a very poor family with five siblings. They had a small house, which was destroyed in a storm. Yulimar said that her only goal in life was to buy her mother a house that had walls.

Yulimar Rojas

Learningsession

Yulimar is over six feet tall and first dreamed of playing volleyball or basketball, but there were no teams where she lived. When she joined the track and field team, she and her teammates had to dig in the ground to build a sand pit that was for the triple jump. Before she learned how to triple jump, Yulimar competed in the shot put and the high jump and also did well in these events. The places where she lived had poor infrastructure, and it was hard to travel and prepare for competitions. She didn’t even have the correct equipment that she needed to compete until she was sixteen.

Learningsession

When she started becoming a competitive athlete, Yulimar had to leave the country where she was born so that she could get the food and medicine she needed to compete. In 2015, Ivan Pedroso, a coach from Cuba, saw Yulimar and invited her to train with him in Spain. On this trip, she received sponsors and was finally able to prepare properly for competition and receive the training that most of the other athletes already had.

Learningsession

This move allowed Yulimar to truly excel. Two years later, she won her first world championship and then won silver in the Olympics. She continued training and proved all of her potential when she won the Olympics in 2020 and then broke the world record in 2022. Yulimar is an example of a true sports hero who was able to overcome obstacles and succeed even though things were difficult in her life.
