A dangerous Quest
Part Three
Jon woke up suddenly, not sure why he was awake. The sun wasn’t fully up yet, and the sky was a pale, murky green color. Jon opened his eyes slowly and then gasped in horror.
“No!” he shouted and jumped up. The wind had caught his campfire, and a small patch of flowers was burning. Another gust of wind moved the fire farther down the hill, and Jon knew he had to do something. He grabbed his water bottle and poured the water onto the flames. He pulled out his cooking pot and ran as fast as he could toward the stream.
His arm was throbbing, but Jon ignored it and raced back to the fire with the water. After he dumped the water on the flames, he raced back to the stream. "If I don't stop the fire, all of the flowers will be lost, and I won't be able to save the elder," Jon spoke out loud. He was determined to stop the fire. He was out of breath, and his legs were more tired than they had ever been. Jon kept running back and forth from the stream to the fire until he thought he would collapse.
Finally, the flames were gone, and the fire was out. Jon lay on the ground gasping for breath. His face was black with ash, and his whole body hurt. When he could finally get up, Jon repacked his bag and went to collect the flowers. He was lucky, the flames had only burned a small part of the mountain. If he hadn’t acted so quickly, there might not have been any flowers left. He picked enough flowers to fill the cloth bag the healer had given him. Then he stopped for a long drink at the stream and started home. The walk back was downhill, so he was able to go much faster than before.
When it started getting dark, Jon broke a large limb off of a tree and ripped his old shirt into strips. He made a torch so that he could see, and kept walking all night.
When the sun came up behind him, Jon could see his village in the distance. He smiled to himself and started walking even more quickly. Just before noon, he arrived home. All of the villagers rushed out to welcome him, and he handed the bag of flowers to the healer. She rushed off to prepare the healing solution, and everyone cheered. His mother rushed out and gave him a big hug. “Are you okay?” she gasped. “You look terrible!”
Jon gave her a broad smile. “I’m fine, mom. Everything is perfect.”
