A dangerous Quest

Jon heard a noise behind him and sat up quickly. A small bird with an orange chest was hopping on a log, looking for food. The sun was rising slowly in the sky, and the morning was still chilly, and Jon could see his breath in the air. He stood up slowly and stretched his sore muscles. The campfire had gone completely out, and the ash was blowing around in the wind. Jon packed up his sleeping bag and then opened a package of crackers for breakfast. He had to get going. Time was running out.

The elder in Jon’s village was terribly ill. It started about a month ago. First, she had a fever, then she got a rash, and her body was as red as a tomato. When she finally started coughing, everyone knew that she had the old sickness. The only cure for the sickness came from the small purple flowers that grew on the top of the mountain. It was a two-day hike to reach the flowers. If Jon made it in time, the village elder might survive.

The villagers chose Jon for the quest because he was dependable, strong, and brave. At first, Jon had been proud to go on the quest. He was happy that the villagers admired him. But now, alone in the middle of the cold, endless woods, he wasn’t sure that he was actually brave. Last night, he was so scared of the noises that the animals made that he couldn’t fall asleep for hours. Now he was tired and his muscles ached.

“If the flowers aren’t ready when you get there, you’ll have to stay on the mountain until they bloom.” Jon’s father reminded him before he left. “And if you get lost, you must walk toward the sun in the morning. You should always be going east.” Jon remembered his father’s words as he lifted his backpack onto his back and turned toward the sun. The plants at his feet still had dew on them when he started to walk. Jon hoped that it would warm up soon.
