Physical properties of matter
When you observe matter, you can see that every substance has its own physical properties. Different substances have different colors, hardness and density. Sometimes it is easy to bend a substance or change its shape. This is called malleability. Some substances can conduct electricity, and you should move away from these during a thunderstorm! Sometimes it is easy to dissolve a substance into a liquid, like when people put sugar into coffee. Every substance has a different temperature at which it boils or melts.
Cutting paper is a physical change.
Physical properties of matter
If you change the way a substance looks, you create a physical change. If you dissolve sugar into coffee, you create a physical change. The sugar is still there; it’s still sugar; it’s just now a liquid. You can create physical changes by ripping paper (It’s still paper!), breaking a rock (The smaller rocks are still the same kind of rock!) or freezing water (The ice is still H2O!).
This salad is a mixture of different vegetables.
Physical properties of matter
You can also make a physical change by creating a mixture. A mixture is when any substances are mixed together without changing the substances. Imagine if you put all of your pencils in a jar with all of your friend’s pencils. You will have a mixture because the items are still pencils, they are just now mixed together. If you cut up many different types of fruit and put them in a bowl, you will make a mixture.
This physical change is almost impossible to undo.
Physical properties of matter
Physical changes are quite helpful in our lives. If you have to take out the trash, it is much easier if you crush the trash to make it smaller. If you write all of your homework incorrectly, you might want to tear up the paper and start over again. Other physical changes cause problems. If you drop a glass on the floor, it will be very difficult to get that glass back together again.
